These Eye Creams Are Like Coffee For Your Face

Image
Can we get a big "hell yeah!" for eye creams? Without them we would be lost, wandering around hopelessly, looking just as tired as we feel. Yes, this is hyperbolic, but thanks to these potions, our puffiness, fatigue, and dark circles really are reduced — and for that, we celebrate. Due to a combination of late nights and poor sleep habits, we've had more than our fair share of opportunities to test out puff-reducing, bag-demolishing eye creams. We've tried the good, the bad — and then we've tried the miracle workers. That's what the eye creams ahead are: cool, creamy miracles. Now, we're not naive enough to think that a tube of cream alone can fix fatigue. No, it comes down to a combo of an out-of-this-world product and some serious application know-how. So, we went to the woman with all the complexion-perfecting answers to get the scoop on the best way to apply your eye cream in order to make your gaze its most rested. 7 Editor-Approved Matte Lipsticks That Will Never Forsake You

Image
For the average person, the promise to love someone (or something) for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health is reserved for wedding vows, 'til death do them part. For us, the same could be said about our favorite matte lipstick. There's a time and a place for glosses, stains, and sheer balms, but a good matte lip color is always a requirement to have on hand. After all, what's there to not love about major pigment that lasts through a burger and/or a kiss? But not all matte formulas are made equally magical; some leave lips sandpaper-y, others go on smooth but feather and bleed in minutes. So when you find a matte lipstick that has serious color payoff, doesn't make lips shrivel up into themselves, and can hold strong through a makeout or pizza session, then you've found a keeper. Ahead, find the matte formulas our editors are loving for the long haul. Pat McGrath MatteTrance Lipstick "As someone with dry lips, it...

Sesame Street Introduces A Muppet In Foster Care

Image
In another effort to make sure all kids can see themselves represented onscreen, Sesame Street just introduced a new character. Her name is Karli, and she’s in foster care. Karli and her “for-now” parents Dalia and Clem made their debut on the Street this week, and we already know this sweet new muppet will be a fantastic addition to the show. Karli is part of the “Sesame Street in Communities” program, which is designed to create and provide free resources for community providers and caregivers who work on tough issues like homelessness, divorce, grief and traumatic experiences. All the “Sesame Street in Communities” resources are free and available in multiple languages, and honestly, Sesame Street is just too good and pure for this world. In addition to appearing on the show, Karli is featured in YouTube videos for the program so more kids can see her online. In one video, called “On Your Team,” Elmo’s dad, Louie, chats with Dalia and Clem about the experience of being foste...

California Teachers Have To Pay For Their Own Subs While On Sick Leave

Image
When a second grade teacher in San Francisco’s public school system was diagnosed with breast cancer, she quickly ran through her ten allotted sick days while undergoing treatment. And because of a 40-year-old California state law, she’s paying for the substitute teacher who’s helming her class during each day of her extended sick leave. Specifically, while the teacher, who has asked to stay anonymous, fights for her life, she’s also losing $195 a day, straight from her paycheck. Now that the beloved teacher’s story has hit the news, parents, teachers, administrators, and politicians are trying to understand why these laws exist and trying to take steps to get them dismantled if possible. The history of the law goes back to the mid-1970s, when the rule was added to the state education code: instead of paying into a state disability program like most other workers, their pay is docked when they face an extended leave. At the time, it was considered good that teachers could retain ...

Got A Sharpie? You Can Pull Off Fall's Coolest Nail Art Trend

Image
At the Moschino show during Milan Fashion Week, models like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner walked out in ensembles that looked as if someone had scribbled a fat, black marker all over them — right down to their nails. According to Miss Pop, the nail artist who came up with the zig-zag design inspired by the collection, the high-fashion version is actually pretty difficult to create. "To be honest, they're deceptively hard," Pop says. "I took a striper brush dipped in Essie Licorice, then I painted the letter U back and forth in two directions. That is incredibly easy with a pen, but so much harder with a brush." That's why, if you're doing it at home, she recommends picking up a Sharpie marker instead. "You might have to go over it a few times because the black won't be as intense, but it works," Pop says. "What I would do is use a sheer nude or a clear polish, and then squiggle the black Sharpie over my nail and seal with a topco...

One Freezer-Full of Dresses at a Time

Image
Once a week, on Thursdays, Curator Elizabeth Lay unpacks and repacks a deep freezer in the little brick Cape Cod at the edge of the Montgomery County Historical Society campus in Rockville. But what's inside might be surprising: it's clothing. Lay, who operates the historical society's textile conservation laboratory, has been going through a process to freeze away the carpet beetles that find themselves attracted to the dusters, wedding gowns and flapper dresses of Montgomery County's historical movers-and-shakers. “It's my favorite day of the week,” Lay said of the unpacking and repacking ritual. The historical society has recently opened up Lay's work to the public, offering appointments to watch her work on Thursdays. “Not every box has the beetles,” Lay said, but she's still methodically going through the society's entire collection to get rid of the visitors once and for all. There are about 10,000 objects in the historical society'...

Could Sadie Sink Become the New Face of Ethical Fashion

Image
Sadie Sink, also known as Max Mayfield in Stranger Things season two, has quickly joined the likes of Millie Bobby Brown, Storm Reid, and Zendaya as a Gen Z fashion powerhouse. These young women aren't hitting the red carpet in princess dresses and pink sparkles; they're wearing looks straight off the runway or, in Brown's case, collaborating with brands like Calvin Klein on age-appropriate custom frocks. Back in March, Sink opened the Undercover show in Paris and cemented her status as a serious fashion fan; with 3.9 million Instagram followers, the 15-year-old also introduced the avant-garde Japanese label to a lot of kids who'd probably never heard of it. A few days ago, Sink wore on-the-rise label Hiraeth Collective, the 100 percent vegan line Rooney Mara launched with her friend Sarah Schloat in February. The elegant puffed-sleeve black-and-white dress was made with zero animal-based materials; instead of silk, for instance, Mara and her team developed a Japane...
